Article Summaries by Ben Smith
1. The summary of the first article "Violent Video Games: The Effects on Youth, and Public Policy Implications" written by Douglas A. Gentile and Craig A. Anderson, published in 2006 is that it discusses the effects that violent video games has on children. They explain the research effects that the video games has on children with theories such as why playing video games children might increase aggressive behaviors. Also they explain the experimental studies such as the short-term and long-term effects of playing violent video games. In addition this article goes into how there has been not a lot of public policy on how to reduce exposure of children and youth to media violence, and it feels like that is a big issue.
2. The summary of the second article "Weinstein, Tarantino and the standoff over movie violence" written by Andrew O'Hehir, published February 1st, 2014 by Salon magazine is that it discusses how Harvey Weinstein vowed not to support ultraviolent movies, even though throughout his career he had gained fame and recognition for being someone involved in violent movies, and it raises awareness to how violence is being depicted. He goes on to uses examples of pop culture such as, Grand Theft Auto and Zero Dark Thirty. Also he uses gun statistics to show as more and more people are getting guns, the statistics actually show that the number of incidents associated with them is actually decreasing. All in all O'Hehir commends Weinstein for standing up and promoting this issue.
3. The summary of the third article "Columbine: Whose Fault Was It?" written by Marilyn Manson, published June 24, 1999 by RollingStone magazine is that it discusses the argument of violence and whose fault it really is. For example Marilyn says if some teenager enacts violence should he be held responsible for his actions, or is the blame placed on the parents for not enlightening him to what is right or wrong. Also it discusses how as a society we glorify violence in such cases as he presented with the creation of the bomb, which its sole purpose is destruction, yet we glorify it. Finally the author incorporates how he is misrepresented, saying how he's "a controversial artist, one who dares to have an opinion and bothers to create music and videos that challenge people's ideas in a world that is watered-down and hollow."
